Dr Mina also known as Dr. Philomena Pereira D’Souza, Pediatrician retired Professor, Pediatrics Goa Medical College has always been drawn to the needy especially children with or without families. Felt challenged to reach out to dare to make a real difference in the lives of those around us childrenand families with life limiting and life threatening conditions. Presently nurturing the dream of home care for children and persons in need.

Barbara has a master’s in clinical psychology. Having worked in the Department of Palliative Medicine TATA Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, she moved back to Goa with the intention to give back to her community. Besides being the secretary of the society she is the coordinator of the children’s palliative care Centre Goa. She firmly believes that you need to be different to make a difference.

Treasurer

Temla Pinto, Economics Graduate, Treasurer of Novi Survat, joined because of a deep personal and moving encounter with two special need children was struck by the inclusiveness of the children within their families and friends. Hopes that she can spread awareness of the joy and satisfaction of carrying for differently abled children and their families.

Dr. Megha Deshpande has attained her Masters of Physiotherapy in Pediatrics from KLE’s institute of PhysiotherapyBelgaum, in the year 2010. She has been working at Novi Survat physiotherapy centre for the past 6 years. She likes working with children and she feels her biggest achievement would be making a difference in the lives of the children and seeing a smile on the faces of their parents. She believes its important to establish a rapport with parents as it gives them a sense of comfort to share their difficulties with her. she loves listening to musicdancing and reading books.

Dr. Smisha Amogh Prabhu Parrikar

Dr. Smisha. A. Prabhu. Parrikar has completed her Bachelors in Physiotherapy from Karnatak Lingayat Educational Society (KLES). In the past she has worked at Margao Physiotherapy clinic,Trimurti hospital and J J Costa hospital before shifting base to Porvorim. She is the longest serving therapist who joined Novi Survat Physiotherapy centre in the year 2009 and continues to bloom. She claims that working at Novi Survat Physiotherapy centre has given her a better outlook and a medium to channelize not only her professional interests but also humanitarian sphere. She feels happy just seeing the smile on the parents faces when the child succeeds in bridging a Milestone.

Dr. Deepti Ganesh Shirodkar
Physiotherapist Member

Dr.Deepti Ganesh Shirodkar has a bachelor’s in physiotherapy from Rajiv Gandhi University Bangalore Karnataka. She had her own clinic in Margao from the year 2007 to 2009after which she joined Disha special school for mentally challenged children Panjim. She began her journey at novi Survat physiotherapy centre from 2016 till date. Deepti loves to see her patients smiling after her sessions and makes sure she can bring about some progress in children who are differently abled.

Eremita Has a master’s degree in English from Shivaji University Kolhapur. She has been working at Starting Point charity school for underprivileged children from 2001 initially as teacher and now is the principal. Giving to the needy brings her more happiness rather than receiving. Happy to help and serve the needy.

What we do

a.Physiotherapy centre

Novi Survat Centre for the physically challenged was set up by Dr.Philomena P. D’Souza (MD Paediatrics) on October 19th 2007 to provide holistic services to the physically and multiply challenged children. The centre cares for 18-20 children who are given one-hour individual Physiotherapy sessions on a regular basis atleast three times a week. There is a team of three fully trained physiotherapists who are presently working under the guidance of Dr. Megha Deshpande (MPT)Dr. Smisha Parrikar (BPT), Dr. Deepti Shirodkar (BPT) from monday to friday.
Speech therapy is provided once a week on Saturday afternoons by a qualified speech therapist.

 A social worker has recently joined the team on a regular basis.

Dental care treatment is provided by the Goa Dental College, Bambolim for children from Novi Survat at the Pedodontia OPD.
The staff also includes a driver and a domestic helper.
Free transport is provided from selected pick up and drop points for all patients registered patients referred from Sanjay school, Porvorim are given transport facility and therapy on a daily basis.
The centre is a non-profit organisation and affording patients donate voluntarily whenever able but poor patients are given services free of charge.

 

b. Children’s Palliative Care

Children’s Palliative Care was initiated in June 2019 under the direction of Dr. Philomena, Paediatrician and Barbara Da Silva, Coordinator and Psychologist (Spl. Clinical Psychology). The aim is to reduce the burden and agony of families having children with life limiting and life threatening conditions. Presently referrals are sent by the department of Paediatrics and Paediatric Neuro Rehab Centre, Goa Medical College, Childline Goa, District Hospitals of North and South Goa, Prateek Menezes Memorial Foundation, Sabrecare, Sethu and Department of Medical Oncology, Goa Medical College . Home visits are mandatory and homecare is ensured wherever necessary. Hospital visits (twice weekly) for hospitalised patients, end of life care and support and bereavement counselling is being provided. Provision of education through home tutors, registration for computer classes, purchase of assistive devices like wheelchairsconsumables like pampers/medications/nutritional supplements and transport allowance for hospital visits. Currently we have enrolled children with relapsed cancer, children with HIV AIDS, inoperable heart disease, Chronic illnesses and children with disabilities. Psycho-social support is being given to children referred by Childline GoaAsro Tivim and other NGOs.

 

c.Workshops/ Training

We plan to conduct regular workshops and training program for doctors, nurses, social workers, and therapists to provide supportive care for children with life limiting and life threatening conditions and their families.
